about me
now
that you're here you would probably like to hear something about me and
my obsession with pretty things. my name is scarlett and i live in
zurich, switzerland. my professional life takes place in advertising.
but apart from that, i'm also obsessively interested in many other
things. i couldn't picture my life without some sort of pet project on the
side, to keep me inspired and going. admittedly, people often ask me
whether my (at times quite excessive) project orientation don't get in the way of my
money job. well, they don't. in fact, i believe the opposite is true.
steven b. johnson* (whom i kindly borrowed this quote from) put it
nicely:
'one recurring theme in almost all the interesting people that i look at is that they have a lot of hobbies. the innovators are constantly working on three, four or five pet projects — beyond their main job.'
so
yeah, i surround myself with things i like and i welcome and foster
ideas of any kind. among the things that inspire me are:
foggy mornings, tea time (with scones, naturally), flea markets, flower shopping,
stripes, deer, gloomy forests, thrift wood, sea shores to dip the feet in, gathering things in the woods (like woordruff or wild garlic), hotel beds with crisp white
cotton sheets and - most of all - food. apart from eating it (which is, hands
down, the best part) i like to cook, too. as in: really like to cook. though it also freaks me out sometimes... what with all the frizzy hair, chipped nails and burnt fingers associated with it... not to mention the excess gram or two, ahem... but in general, i think it's safe to say that cooking fulfills me because
you always end up having a product, a result. like a warm apple tart.
or a freshly baked lasagna. or a pile of cookies (if you don't accidentally end up eating all the cookie dough raw, that is. never happened, of course, i just mean it's a possibility, for those with no will-power, yeah). it's my declared goal to make people happy
with my food; because sharing is caring. i cook for my friends, family -
and soon now strangers, too (read on for some more insights).
about fork & flower
this
site is called 'fork & flower', because (as i explained above) i'm
passionate about food. so much for the fork, then (hey, i like to eat with my hands, too! but for a real proper dinner, let's stick to the fork, shall we? manners rule the world, it's a fact we can't get around...). for me, it doesn't
have to be gault millaut... in fact, i'd always prefer a plate of simple
spaghetti al pomodoro to anything fancy-schmancy. but i believe it's
the love and care that we add and, last but not least, the attention to
detail. if you bring out your favorite silver cutlery for the occasion,
light the extra candle and have a bunch of fresh flowers on the dining table - that makes all the difference. so the
'fork' and the 'flower' both are essential ingredients, if you like,
for successful entertaining. it's what i live by.
get in touch
i
love to hear from readers! and i try to answer as many comments and
questions as possible. sometimes, though, i'm just too lazy, or simply
stuck in the kitchen somewhere, with sticky fingers, hair pointing to
all sides and a sweaty brow... ahem, classy, i know. but if you get in touch i'll
be sure to answer you, asap. so leave me a comment or say 'hi' through
email: [email protected].

Hello, Scarlett!
ReplyDeleteWe are foodwriters Alexey and Olga from Russia. Being devoted fans of beautiful and tasty food we were impressed with the recipes and amazing pictures from your blog.
We are going to start an online project about food and plan to translate recipes from blogs all over the world into Russian. Actually, there is still a kind of «Cultural Iron Veil» here, as many Russian cooks don’t know foreign languages and cannot get useful information from the internet. So our mission is to show Russian people a great variety of cooking ideas and recipes of tasty and healthy dishes.
We need your permission to use the recipes and pictures from your blog. We promise to translate the text properly (no robots), never change pictures and always preserve your copyright for the recipe. We will name you as the author and put a direct link to your blog, so you can get some readers from Russia.
It’s a non-profit project, so we cannot pay for the texts and pictures. If you accept the idea of exchanging your permission for a direct link, we will gladly translate and publish your texts and pictures.
The project will be here: omfood.ru as soon as we collect 100 recipes for a good start.
Best regards, Alexey and Olga Borodin
hey alexey and olga
Deletewow, that's a wonderful project! happy to 'donate' a couple of recipes. will you let me know which ones you used so that i have a rough idea of what is wandering around from me in the interwebs? also, i would love to link back from my blog to your site, for possible russian readers who come in through my blog.
my email: [email protected]
thanks and love
scarlett
Hi there,
ReplyDeleteWhile surfing the web, I found your blog page and I must admit that it is quite impressive and it’s just too perfect for our project. I don’t know how to catch your attention but hopefully you could spare me a minute to read this message
It is noticeable that there is a great number of tasty recipes on your blog. Our site is a search engine that gathers all the best recipes from all major worldwide blogs and websites in one place. We would like to suggest you to have a look at the “Top Food Blog” section on our recently launched site, the www.mytaste.com .
We would like your blog to be featured on our site, have it added to the Top Food Blog list with your recipes indexed to mytaste.com. All you just have to do is add the URL of your blog in this link: http://www.mytaste.com/add-your-food-blog
Our project is the second biggest worldwide when it comes to recipe search, and it’s already live in 37 countries, including countries in Europe, Asia, Middle-East, Australia, South America and South Africa. We deliver thousands of visitors to food blogs daily. Some of the top food blogs receive at least 20,000 visitors from us on a weekly basis.
This is something you can do to make your blog more visible and be exposed to a lot of people in United States, Canada and around the world; this can help your blog page to get more visitors and increase traffic.
Hopefully your food blog will be up there in the top!

Just found your Austrian germknoedel recipe in The Guardian. Allow me two comments: firstly, always grind the poppy seeds, then mix with the sugar, but serve the melted butter separately. Secondly, never ever serve with fruit compote or indeed custard. Custard is strictly reserved for baked yeast concoctions, e.g. dampfnudeln.
ReplyDeletedear margrit, thank you for the valuable insights that you provided! i'm sure there are more refined ways to prepare this dish (which, by the way, is a favorite of mine). you might find that the recipe is indeed made of a yeast dough, though? do you think custard is allowed then? ;)
